Start with the way you want the room to feel.

Look at the ceiling in daylight and with your usual lighting. Consider its relationship to the walls, trim and furnishings. These conceptual previews help compare visual character; the final application will depend on your space.

Smooth finished residential ceiling

Smooth

Our primary modern aesthetic: clean, minimal and continuous. Smooth surfaces reveal imperfections more readily than texture, so careful preparation matters. Depending on condition, more skim-coat and preparation work may be needed.

Knockdown ceiling texture
Illustrative finish preview

Knockdown

A familiar Florida aesthetic with softly flattened texture. It adds gentle depth and can visually soften minor surface variation, while remaining less flat than Smooth. Underlying defects still need appropriate repair.

Orange peel ceiling texture

Orange Peel

Fine, consistent texture with a lightly pebbled appearance. It adds quieter visual character than the broader flattened patches of Knockdown and differs from the coarser texture of popcorn.

Skip trowel ceiling finish

Skip Trowel

A hand-applied finish with an irregular artisan pattern and more visual movement. Each application naturally varies. Its troweled character is distinct from Knockdown and is not a Venetian plaster treatment.

Tongue & Groove

Warm-white painted planks create clean parallel lines and architectural definition. This premium alternative is a separate ceiling treatment, not a spray texture. Installation scope and pricing differ materially from texture finishes.

Compare the character. Then consider the preparation.

A useful starting point for your estimate—not a fixed labor or price ranking. Existing condition can change the preparation each finish needs.

Can texture replace needed drywall repairs?

Texture may soften the appearance of small variations, but it does not replace repairs to damaged drywall. The surface needs to be suitable for the selected finish before application.
